PROUD OF THESE COUNTRY GIRLS: MADDIE & TAE’S “GIRL IN A COUNTRY SONG”

I’m sitting at home a couple of days ago and my mom turns to me to say, “You’re a huge feminist, I have to show you that there is at least ONE country song I like.” At first, I was really confused about how those two related, but after watching this video, I broke out into a huge grin and I said I would HAVE to make a blog post about it.

Now, I used to be quick to say that I don’t like country, but that would be a lie. I grew up in Mississippi and probably wouldn’t have been able to survive my teenage years if I couldn’t at least bear through listening to it, and then eventually liking it. However, I never could support the way that men always made women into just their long hair or daisy dukes. Apparently, I’m not the only one- and these girls actually had it in them to write a song about it.

Madison, from Texas, and Taylor, from Oklahoma, represent just what I hope for to change my hometown: a southern twist on feminist mentality. I want little girls to look at this video and realize that they don’t have to just be backdrops for men’s songs, that there’s more to them than some tan legs hanging out the window of a beat up, muddy truck. They have voices, and not using them will drive them “redneck crazy.”
